Peter and Carol’s Engagement

The sun shone brightly at the 5 o’clock hour. As we walked through the wildflowers, a soft ocean breeze gently blew through her hair and the smell of cool salty waves filled the air. He gazed at the blue horizon, his arm holding her close to his side. Picture perfect. This is how Peter and [...]

Kyle and Stacy’s Engagement Shoot

Before I begin, I have to tell you that I LOVE Kyle and Stacy’s story. I really really do. They first met at work. She was the new girl who had just moved to California from Texas. She was a brilliant blonde whose love for conversation and relationship annoyed Kyle a little bit. To Kyle, [...]

Daniel and Che-monte’s Engagement

Daniel and Che-monte met dancing. How romantic is that?! They also happen to work for the same large company near Nuremberg, Germany. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her… for a good reason… she’s GORGEOUS. And she couldn’t stop thinking of that sweet young man and how he’s “not like other guys in Germany.” [...]

Brian and Megan’s “I Do” | A Gorgeous Wedding at Casa Romantica

There are few young couples who know the depth of love Brian and Megan do. Something happens in a love story when hardships put mountains in the way… it refines things down to what really matters and forces you to find courage from beyond yourself to make the climb. If you didn’t get a chance [...]

2010 in Review

Beginnings and Endings are times of contemplation and intentionality for me. At the end of every year, I find myself fast-pitched into remembrance and reflection of all that happened, the ways God blessed me, the storms I weathered and the lessons I learned. In the end, I am grateful for the challenges, the adventures, milestones, and the triumphs, at the same time, stirred to action to make the following year even better for all that the previous year brought to the table.
It hasn’t quite sunk in that it’s TWO-THOUSAND-AND-ELEVEN yet. In my mind, we’re just coming upon 2010…. maybe it’s because this year FLEW BY. Whatever the reason, I’m having to practice writing “2011″ over and over on a notepad to make it sink in.
The past few years I’ve included a slideshow or a “Top 10″ to recap the years events, but 2010 was a goliath of a year, and trying to cram everything into a brief synopsis has proved to be a task and a half. With that said, even though I have not included everything I’ve shot this year, this year’s post is still the antithesis of brief.
And before I begin… if, for some reason, at any point, I complained to you this year about life being less than adventurous, PLEASE SLAP ME NOW because that’s SO far from the truth.
JANUARY
……………………………………………………..

While most of my January was spent tying up loose ends from 2009 and preparing for wedding season 2010, I did spend some time shooting. I shot some rad portraits for Kory Kraning’s Personal Training business, I documented the start of my lifelong BFF Kim’s medical school attendance, and I captured the final days of Allison’s pregnancy.

FEBRUARY

……………………………………………………..

February marked the beginning of “booking season” for me. In between meetings and planning, I shot one of my favorite engagement shoots of the year with Zak and Katrina in Santa Monica. Love these two…

February was also a really sad month for me… my good friend Sean Riedl died. His death really shook me and served as a startling reminder of just how fragile our lives are. The memory of who Sean was in my life, also helped open my eyes to see the importance of laughter. Sean will always be the symbol of “Living the Dream” to me and will always be the voice in the back of my mind whispering, “Life’s not half as serious as you think it’s supposed to be, Berta.”

MARCH

……………………………………………………..

In the beginning of March, Christopher and I found ourselves on the other side of the globe… in the middle east. This trip was one of the COOLEST things to happen in 2010 and I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that we visited all these places! It put in “real life terms” what it means for God to hear my prayers, and it serves as an exciting reminder that He is a Good God who loves to give us the desires of our heart. Here’s some highlight shots…

Finally arriving in Cairo after almost a whole 24 hours of flying…

JULY

……………………………………………………..

I flew back from Texas, and almost immediately, wedding upon wedding came and went. This wedding, in particular, stood out because it took place at Hotel Maya… an AWESOME hotel in Long Beach, CA. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Then my Photog friend Hanssie Trainor asked me to help her teach a Socal Photo Shootout, a workshop for new photographers at the Ebell Club. This was probably one of the most terrifying things I did this year. Just the concept of ME… teaching ANYONE… is so weird… I feel like I still have a lot to learn. So I taught the Bridal section of the workshop. Here are some SWEET images of this gorgeous model named Phoenix. It was such a fun experience and I’d love to do this again soon!

bo2010_jul_blog-wla-photog-shootout-2

bo2010_jul_wla-photog-shootout-5

Another intense learning experience was shooting more band portraits for the Good Kids. The only reason this was challenging was because we did the first portion of the shoot in the woods in the black of night, armed with only a flashlight, my lighting set up, and a blue lightsaber. I learned a completely new photographic concept for this shoot called “painting with light” to illustrate their new album’s title.

OCTOBER

……………………………………………………..

October came quick and as much as I thought I’d be able to catch up from the prior excitement…. it just seemed to keep getting busier. And as we all know, when it rains, it pours. One of the most influential people in my high school and young adult life was a crazy swim coach by the name of Todd Larsen. Todd was one of my first bosses, and a formative mentor in my adolescence. He taught me so much and was my role model for a life “lived.” Todd was yet another person who taught me the importance of laughter, fun, and hard work. His death put a lot of people through the emotional ringer and left us all wondering why, of all people, cancer had to take him. I would not be the person I am today without his influence and mentoring.

bo2010_oct_todd-larsen-memorial-folder

As much as I would have liked the world to have stopped for a time so I could catch my breath, it didn’t. It did, however, bring many gorgeous sunsets and warm days to remind me that He is good despite the pain in the world. October also brought some really fun shoots for me… one of which I still can’t get enough of… David and Chelsea’s Newport Beach Engagement Shoot…

DECEMBER

……………………………………………………..

The last shoot of the year was scheduled for Dec. 11th and I was so grateful to not be adding to the pile for the rest of the year. Since then, it’s been work work work, trying to finish everything. Here’s a shot from Michael and Rebecca’s Antique Store Engagement Shoot…. LOOOOVE this shot!

bo2010_dec_wmichael-and-rebecca-engagement-160

After assessing the highs and lows of this past year, I feel as if the time that’s passed has been decades instead of just one year. And the amount of growth that’s occurred in all areas of my life and business has been HUGE. It’s still inconceivable how far I’ve come since I started Kate Noelle Photography in 2008… and looking back on all the places He’s taken me and remembering all the beautiful faces I’ve had the opportunity to photograph since then is mind blowing. If there was ever a testament clear as day to prove that God is Good…. my business would be that testament. It has definitely NOT been smooth sailing this past year. In fact, 2010 has been one of the most challenging years of my life. But at the finish line of 2010, I can look back at all those times I fell flat on my face, and see that I picked myself back up and I finished the race. He has been SO GOOD to me this year and it’s a shame that most days I allow myself to be too busy to appreciate it. Everything I have, and everything I’ve accomplished this past year, I owe, in its entirety, to the One who gave it all to me in the first place… and I am SO THANKFUL.

It’s now 2011 and I’m excited to see what will happen! Bring on the ADVENTURES!!!

GO | Portrait of a Missionary | Becca Schott

Meet Becca Schott.

“Becca, internet… Internet, Becca… (Shaking Hands)”

blog-wbecca-schott002

I originally met Becca a little over a year ago at California Pizza Kitchen, through an incredible lady named Barri Brown. Barri organized this introduction and lunch date specifically because she loved both Becca and I and wanted us to be photography friends. It wasn’t until about 6 months ago, when Becca wrote on my Facebook wall about her acceptance to the YWAM Herrnhut School of the Arts, that our friendship really started. We met up for coffee and talked more in depth about the process of deciding to do Youth With a Mission (YWAM), her thoughts on the whole matter, and questions she had. And as I sat and listened to all she was thinking about, worried about, and challenged by…. I couldn’t help but see “pre-YWAM me” in her (sounds cheesy, I know). But really, truly, it was like a blast to the past and my excitement for her, for missions, and for all God is doing EXPLODED in my heart and the overflow of that explosion, of sorts, is another reason why this mini series of portraits is so important to me.

And again, before we continue, I want to give a little foreward to this Part Two of the mini project “GO | Portrait of a Missionary|“. I mentioned in the last posts, that my beginnings as a photographer started in missions. I remember what it was like being in a foreign country with a bunch of people I’d never met before. I remember, at times, feeling overwhelmed with all God was showing me/teaching me. I remember battling the stress of living off the support of family/friends/anonymous donors, worrying I wouldn’t be able to pay for even a plane ticket home…. But I also remember how powerful the prayers and encouragements of my blog readers were in all the triumphs and challenges I encountered. While actually partaking in the missions work was important, sharing the joys and the tough times on my blog was also important. It allowed people to journey with me and to connect on a deeper and more personal level to what God was doing… it wasn’t just me who was being challenged. So, in my efforts to support missionaries who are foregoing their comfort, their paying jobs, their family and friends, even their lives in order to give their all for the Kingdom… I want to encourage you, again, to dig deep into their stories. Follow their blogs. Send encouragements and prayers their way. And if you feel led, support them financially… even if it’s $20… it’s amazing how God can use the little you feel you have to move mountains. And please don’t hesitate to email me if you have questions. Ready? Let’s GO…

Becca is a vibrant 20 year & 11 month old Irvine-ite whose passion for photography, artistic culture, and God have all played a huge part in her decision to do YWAM for a year in Herrnhut, Germany… the same base I was at during my YWAM adventure! She’s AWESOME and her smile is contagious!

blog-wbecca-schott008

Q:      Favorite thing to do in the entire world?
Becca: Hmm…I have three! 1) Traveling 2) Sitting in my yard in the morning with coffee and a book 3) Going adventuring with my friends or family.
Q:      Latest obsession?
Becca: My camera! I’m learning how to use all the features I didn’t know were there and I just can’t put it down!
blog-wbecca-schott017
blog-wbecca-schott042
blog-wbecca-schott026
Q.      Where are you headed?
Becca: I’m headed to Germany with YWAM for the lecture phase, which is classes and  training and what not. I’ll be there for about 4 months and after that I’ll be going to another country for the outreach portion for about 2 months. This location is to-be-determined.
Q.      How long will you be gone?
Becca: I’ll be gone about 6.5 months. The school portion of the trip will be about 4ish months and the outreach portion of the trip will be about 2.5ish months.
Q.      If you’re working with an organization, what organization are you working with, and what will you be doing on your mission trip?
Becca: I’m working with an organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM). I don’t really know what to expect or what exactly I’ll be doing besides loving God and showing others God’s love through loving them. I don’t know where I’ll be going for outreach yet or what God has in store for me…but I am expecting huge things… hugely unexpected things…. God often does hugely unexpected things…and I am now starting to realize that that’s how God works more often than not.
blog-wbecca-schott036
blog-wbecca-schott054
Q.      What excites you most about international missions?
Becca: Sharing the beautiful story of Jesus with people that might not have gotten the chance to hear it. I will be seeing things I have never seen before, and I will be learning so much about others, God, and myself. It’s going to be a big adventure and I’m stoked to find join in what God’s doing.
Q.      How did you decide that going on this trip was the right choice at this time?
Becca: Well, I don’t feel like I ever decided. If it were up to me, I’m POSITIVE I’d still be unsure. I was told about YWAM and the photography discipleship training school in Herrnhut, and I thought it sounded really awesome… so I went home and researched it some more. I felt like I should apply…so I did, and since then, God has not stopped working in me! Sometimes I feel so stretched in life that I just want to say, “God! I’m done learning! This is hard and this is annoying!” But I know that God is putting things in my life to teach me, prepare me, and show me that He can take care of me. He loves me and He hears me.

blog-wbecca-schott085
blog-wbecca-schott071
Q.      How do you hear the voice of God?
Becca: I don’t so much hear it as I feel it. When something is right my body starts tingling and I get the shiver bumps. And when something is wrong, my heart feels heavy and my body feels weak.
Q.      What do you think you’ll miss most about home?
Becca: My bed! I’m sure I’ll miss my family and my friends as well…but I know I’ll miss my bed first. hehe
Q.      What would you say to encourage someone who might be considering a long term mission trip like yours?
Becca: Do not fear for God is with you, He will strengthen you and uphold you with his righteous right hand!

Q.      What are some ways we can support and encourage you during this adventure?
Becca: I definitely need prayer! I’m still working on getting all the finances together, so prayer that the financial support would continue coming in, prayer for my nerves as I’m starting to get nervous, and prayer for safety. Prayer and encouragement are probably the most important for me.
I will also be keeping a blog while I’m gone, called My Life Be Like . I’ll be posting pictures and sharing what I’m learning along the way. I hope you all will join me on this adventure and experience, with me, all that God as to teach and show us! I have a website, but I’ll mostly be posting to my blog for the duration of my travels. If you’d like to support me financially, you can send checks to:

Becca Dearest,
I am ECSTATIC beyond comprehension for this adventure you’re about to embark on. There will be tough times, and there will also be elated highs you’ve never experienced in your life. Document them in words and in pictures. Take them captive with your lens and camera and film. Soak up every possible experience you can and seek with every ounce of your being to see with His measure of Beauty… because, really, that’s photography at it’s core…. documenting the Beauty of Him.
Please know that we, as blog readers are behind you 100% and know that you’re backed with countless numbers of people’s prayers and thoughts. This adventure isn’t just about you and God, as much as it feels that way sometimes…. the things you write on your blog and the pictures you share connect more people than you realize. I can’t wait to experience Him with you in Herrnhut and around the globe.
“Gott es gute alles zeit (God is good all the time)”,
Kate

GO | Portrait of a Missionary

As you know, I originally started into photography with Youth With A Mission, learning and doing mission photography in Germany and Thailand. Since then, the adventure has taken a different direction… towards being a wedding and portrait photographer. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I get caught up in “work” more often than not… and I don’t just want my blog to show all the cool weddings and people I shoot… I want it to also be a connecting tool. As much we talk with friends and meet people going through the “in’s” and “out’s” of daily life… sometimes it’s easy to fall into accidental disconnection. I know for myself, it’s easy to meet people, to listen to what they’re thinking or doing that day… and then forget to follow up after the fact. But I’ve been making a point to really dig deeper into people’s lives and find ways to connect. I want this blog to be more than just something pretty to look at… and I’m convinced there’s more of you who would like to dig deeper in life as well. So this is why I want to start this mini project that I, for a lack of more unique names, refer to as, “GO”.

go-pic-1

GO |  is a series of portraits of people in my life who’ve made the decision to spend the next 6-8 months doing international missions. It’s also a chance for me, as well as all of you to dig deeper into the world you live in and be a part of a bigger purpose. This series of blog posts will introduce you to these amazing people, they will give you an idea of who they are, what they’re about, what their mission is, and there will be an opportunity for you to connect with them if you choose.

This may seem odd that I’m doing a project like this, because it has nothing to do with wedding photography… but this is something I want to be about… connecting… and participating in the bigger story. Let’s face it. Life is not about wedding photography… and it’s definitely NOT about  me. Life is not about “getting through it” till something or someone better comes along…. and it’s not about settling for the “safe choice.” Life is for living, taking risks, loving others and connecting with those around us on a deeper and more meaningful level.

So, with that said, in the coming weeks, I’ll be posting a series of 2 or 3 portraits and I hope you’ll join me in this mini project. I’m excited to share what these people will be up to and I’m even more excited to continue on with them on their journey and to connect deeper…. I hope you’ll join us.

Here’s just  a sneak peek of some portraits I did last night with one of the girls being featured in this project, Becca Schott. More to come…
