This week has been tumultuous, to say it kindly. Life has surges of big swells, and low tides. Just as Southern California Beaches have experienced its first big swell of the summer, so has life and business for me. You can do one of two things when the surf looks bigger than we can handle… stay on the beach and appreciate the view from afar…. or give it all you have in hopes of a glorious and fulfilling ride. I’m fighting for the courage to tackle the high surf and not allow myself to sit on the beach. I hope you have given this week all you have… and I hope you find that the challenge and your hard work yields many a “ride of your life.”

And to illustrate my thoughts, here’s a shot from a portrait shoot I did earlier this week….. Cheers!

My cousin called me this morning around 11am and asked if I could spare an hour this evening. I asked what for… and he said he was proposing to his girlfriend, Kate. I almost forgot to swallow for about a minute as he told me his initial plan for the evening and when he asked what I thought… I loudly gulped and said how AWESOME I thought the whole idea was. I told him I’d be there. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

As I stealthily stalked them on the tourist packed beach in Newport this evening, I thought how stinkin’ lucky I was, in that moment, to be able to share this with my cousin Scott and my soon to be cousin-in-law Kate. (Is that right? Cousin-in-law?) Anyways… I’m so so SOOO happy for them… and so proud that two such talented and ridiculously intelligent good looking people found each other and fell in love. Here’s some shots from the evening…

Scotty and Kate, I was so honored to be included… and I hope you know I love you more than all the sand in Newport. You rock my world, you give me something to strive to be when I grow up, and I hope you enjoy every second of your engagement. Lastly, Kate… take care of the name you’re marrying into… I’ll expect nothing less than excellence from the future “Katie Akamine.”

Wedding Season is now in full effect for me, which means… well… that it’s wedding season. I’m currently packing my gear up for a mid-week wedding tonight, but I wanted to share some shots I took last week when I went on a short impromptu photo safari with my friend Becca. It was refreshing to experiment with inanimate objects and colors… here’s just a few shots…

On our way out for the evening, we ran into this gigantic bull dog, affectionately named “Beef.” He looked so sad… I had to take a picture. I showed it to him in the back of my camera thinking it would cheer him up to see how cute he looked… but I think it just made him more sad….

I hope these made your Tuesday afternoon more cheery… and I hope Beef made you smile… more weddings and portraits to come in the next few days! So stay tuned…

Today I did something I never do. I spoke at a women’s bible study at church. As I told them, I’ll tell you now…. I’m not really the public speaking type of person… it’s way more comfortable to speak from my blog where I don’t have to worry about saying “um” too much or stuttering. But I did it and I’m pretty proud of myself for figuring out how to work Keynote, pair a remote to my laptop, and connect the correct cords to make it project on a screen… all while talking about something (hopefully) remotely relevant to the audience of women.

A couple weeks ago, Christopher and I sat in the clubhouse at Forest Home talking about life and lessons and the challenges of living on the road less traveled… all pretty light a fluffy subjects (not). It’s a wierd season of life for both of us… feels sort of like a staging ground… or a change of tides. Do you ever have those season in your life? So who knows where the wind will blow or what He’s got up his sleeve for the next chapter of the adventure. I suppose I’ll know in all good time… and when I find out, I’ll be sure to keep you posted. But for now, here’s a few pictures from the same afternoon at camp with Christopher… we made a ship at the craft cabin and it’s my new favorite desk decoration! More weddings and fun shoots to share in the coming weeks!

(Disclaimer:) I’ll be the first to say it. I have a “lovehate” relationship with FAQ blog posts. They’re so helpful and oftentimes, they have gems of advice that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to get from photographers I admire. I’m also kind of skeptical of FAQ posts by photographers who’ve only been in the business a few years (–> don’t worry… my own finger is pointed at my face.)

With that said, I’m going to answer some FAQ’s…. not because I’m a know-it-all…. nor do I feel like I’m qualified to be a role model and answer questions. Most of the time, I feel like y’all are on crack for thinking I’m an inspiration…. but I thank you, from the bottom of my heart and back, for thinking that and encouraging me.

I’m doing this because I want you to know that I’m just like you. Human. I make mistakes. I came from nothing. I started with nothing. I still have a LOOOOONG way to go. So here goes nothing… and please let me know if this helps you at all… I sincerely hope it does.

Did you always want to be a wedding photographer?

No. In fact, my whole life, I swore I would never be an artist for a profession. I fought it. I never took art classes, except for ceramics in High School. And I went to college to be a surgeon… I made that decision before Grey’s Anatomy… thank you very much! I absolutely loved science. And I had everything I needed to be on track for medical school…. my EMT license, I taught Health and Safety courses for Red Cross, I had been a lifeguard since I was 15.5 years old, I was a Biology major, I was a student at Whitworth University, and before I left, I was going to be working in the Health Center as a Nurse’s Aid. But my course changed as I made the decision to take a year off and do international missions with an organization called Youth With A Mission. You can read about my adventures as a missionary here.

My love for weddings (and love itself) has always been prevalent, and while I never considered it a “passion” until about 5 years ago, I’ve been a secret wedding photography junkie for as long as I can remember. Weddings have captivated my heart… and even though I see many more weddings now that it’s my job, I still get butterflies and tears watching the grooms face as he sees his bride for the first time walking down the aisle! (ask Christopher… I cry at every single wedding at some point during the day… it’s bad.) While, for most of my life, the possibility of actually BEING a wedding photographer never crossed my mind, I would be lying if I said I didn’t day dream about it once or twice….

It’s been a long and growing journey since I was a pre-medical student… and if you want to hear the full story, hit me up for a coffee date sometime and I’ll tell you the whole story. But…. long story short, I came back from my mission trip with the impression that the Lord was asking me to start a business in wedding photography. I fought it. Hard. It scared me more than anything.

So NO. I didn’t always want to be a wedding photographer. But I’m so glad I took that leap of faith and went for it.

What steps did you take to get where you are today?

Well, I started with absolutely nothing…. maybe $200 to my name. I had come back from my missionary adventure and had spent almost every penny on funding that. I was paying back student loans from college still, I had miscellaneous bills to pay and absolutely no income. And it was then that I felt God was asking me to start the process of becoming a professional wedding photographer. I know. Crazy. I didn’t think I was good enough. I had no clue about taxes and licenses. I had no clue how to even get clients…. or make a website…. or use any other photo processing software besides Picasa. And… I had no job.

But here’s where the important part is. I thought I was crazy for thinking God was asking me to do something that seemed so far away and impossible. But I keep getting the same impression over and over and over….. until finally I told God, “OKAY FINE!!!! YOU WANT ME TO WALK ON WATER??!!! FINE!!! But you’re going to have to give me better equipment, the best computer, the best processing software, the best possible website that fits me and my lack of HTML/Flash knowledge, experience, and CLIENTS!!! I have NO stinkin’ idea how to do any of this!!!” After that little outburst into my journal… I thought, ” Ha! That’ll show God. He’s totally off His rocker to think this can happen!”

6 months later I had a D300, the best computer, the best post-processing software, a Showit site (which requires little to no HTML/Flash knowledge), and I shot more weddings, couples, and portraits than I ever thought I could. I looked back at the end of 2008 with eyes wide open.

It’s nuts. Everything I have, and everything I have done is ONLY because of Him. Without His eyes, I wouldn’t be able to see things through my lens the way I do. Without his grace and strength, I wouldn’t have even given this dream of mine a second thought for fear it would only lead to failure. And without his providence, I literally would have NOTHING.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “Great. This happened for her, but what about me?” The best encouragement I have for you is to trust that the God of this universe is bigger and more powerful than you could ever comprehend. We have a GOOD God… one who created us to create, to have dreams, and to live out those dreams in relationship with Him. Who better to surrender your life to than the one who created you and your dreams in the first place?

So to put my answer in “every man” terms, I just went for it even though I knew nothing…. and I continue to go for it (even when I still feel like I know nothing)… because I still haven’t “made it.” I hope I never get to the point where I think I’ve “made it” because I’ll have lost what I came to do in the first place. Life’s not about “making it.” Even those few who have all the money and power in the world never feel like they’ve “made it”… because success isn’t measured in dollars or fans…. it’s measured in His warm bear hug and the words, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” Success is successfully glorifying and magnifying the goodness and love of Christ in whatever you do.

Did you study under anyone? Did you have any mentors?

I wish someone had taken me under their wing and taught me everything they know out of the goodness of their heart…. I wish that almost every other day. But I know that I’m walking the journey I am for a reason. Sometimes when you study and learn under someone who’s already established, you take on some of “them” into your business. Sometimes that’s the best gift you can get. Other times, it’s a crutch that keeps you from finding the “you” in your business and art. It’s really easy to adopt what others do because it works…. it’s not so easy to play the trial and error game and figure out what works for You. Again, sometimes it’s the best gift someone can give you… but taking all you learn from them and fitting it around who you are takes a lot of conscious assessment.

I’ve had many friends who’ve allowed me to shoot with them and they have been SO helpful in teaching me tidbits here and there. I’ve truly LOVED shooting with others, learning and teaching each other as we go, and keeping each other accountable to the standards and goals we’ve set for ourselves. I plan on doing that as long as I can! To name a few… Jack Ratana has been one of the most encouraging and fun people I’ve met in the industry. Our faith in Jesus Christ has been the anchor point in friendship, and more than we are colleagues, we’re friends with similar interests. Another friend of mine, Amanda Patrice, has been another huge encouragement and she’s vapor inspiration for me. I can spend just a little time with her and I feel SO inspired and rejuvenated to keep pushing hard for my dreams and goals. Love that girl and looking forward to helping each other out with our weddings later this summer.

So did I study under anyone? No. Did I miss out on a better or easier way of building my business? … I’m not sure. Would I chose to do it differently if I could do it all over again? … Somedays, yes… Somedays, no. Work with what you have, whether you have a mentor or not, and fit the knowledge you learn around who you are.

Canon or Nikon?

Nikon. I grew up with my Dad shooting Nikon film and when I bought my first camera, I chose Nikon because I had all the lenses I needed… they’re old, but trusty…. and I still use a lot of them. And really…. really really truly honestly… it doesn’t matter what brand you use… it matters what you do with what you got. Just because you have the most expensive equipment doesn’t mean you know how to use it to effectively make great pictures.

Okay that’s enough for now. If you have more questions for me, feel free to leave them in the comment box before and I’ll try to answer them the next time around. Hopefully my answers were encouraging I’d love to hear from you if they were. Remember, I don’t know everything…. or even a whole lot for that matter, but I’m grateful for those of you who want to connect and figure out the answers together… because really, asking questions and finding answers together is what makes life so wonderful sometimes.

And to complete this post… here’s some fun shots I took when I visited my friend and fellow photographer Betsy Lackey in Lubbock, TX last month… we did some computer work at Sugar Brown’s Coffee… and I took these on a quick break…

Where have I BEEEEEN?! Well… if you must know. Vacation. The past 2.5 weeks, I’ve been all over the place doing mostly non-work related things… which has been a wonderful break for me (but painful at the same time.) It’s difficult pulling myself away from something I love doing… but it must be done every once in a while. So after a week in Texas (kind of doing work), and a week at a beach house in Oceanside (not doing any work), and a few days up at Forest Home (kind of doing work)… I’m back in the office, hyped and pumped to get some major work done. But before I bury my self back into album designing, I wanted to share some of what I DID do the past few weeks…. I read. Now, I’m not gonna lie… I haven’t read all of them yet. BUT they’re all in my queue to read before the end of August… so I’m still cracking away. Aaaaand If I could recommend one book for you to read this summer… it would be Ignore Everybody and 39 Other Keys to Creativity, by Hugh MacLeod…. it was definitely a book to get the creative juices flowing again! Happy Thursday…

Last week Betsy turned the ripe age of 21 in Lubbock, Texas. Many secret phone calls and some dollars later…. I stepped off a plane and into the Amarillo heat and made my way to the baggage area. As I rode the escalator down, I saw the person I was looking for…. Trevor. Standing with him was Betsy who was holding a sign that read “Bob Canniglia.” She stared at me trying to figure out how she recognized my face, then as recognition filled her eyes, she dropped the sign… and her phone… and made a beeline for me with a smile the size of Texas. While I wasn’t Bob Canniglia…. I’m almost positive I was the next best thing to pick up at the Amarillo airport on the day she turned 21. That afternoon we left Amarillo without my bags (because they hadn’t made it onto a plane yet… and were still in LA) and thus began our 2010 adventures.

Just so ya’ll know, (ha… I said ya’ll) I haven’t seen Betsy in real life since March 2009 when she flew to California to shoot Daniel and Heather’s Wedding with me (you can also view the portraits I shot of her last year.… here). And before that, we hadn’t seen each other since March 2008. We were YWAM buddies in Herrnhut, Germany… and when we came back to the states, we both started the process of becoming wedding photographers. Betsy’s one of my besties…. lifers…. someone I know would take a call from me at 3am if I needed her. And this trip to Texas was nothing short of just what I needed. I got a good dose of Betsy, got a good dose of Nathan, (another YWAM buddy who drove all the way up from Fort Worth to surprise her for a few days as well) a good dose of small town, lots of good food, and lots of good friends. I like Texas.

Mah gurl’s now all grown up. She’s a rockstar photographer in Lubbock…. and she’s getting PRETTTTY popular over there in her neck of the woods. While I was there, we spent a whole evening shootin’ up a storm with her and two of her beautiful friends, Hannah and Claire. Here’s some of my favorites from the night…. there were A LOT! I wonder if you can guess what well known and deliciously creative catalog I had been looking at prior to the shoot… I’ll give you a guess…. it starts with an “A” and ends with an “ologie”…

This was a fun part of the shoot…. Bets and I experimented with some off camera flash in a wheat field. And yes, for those of you who follow me on Twitter…. this was the wheat field I decided I should walk into with 4 inch heels on. Brilliant on my part…. not.

For some reason, the term “vacation” has not had the magnitude it used to when I was younger. Growing up, vacation meant a week camping at the beach, Skippy Peanut Butter, Boogey Boards, and white bread. The anticipation of “vacation” set up shop in my young brain the second the weather got warmer… and for a week, the beach became my world.

I’m heading out to the beach once again with my family for “vacation.” But it’s different this time…. because my job goes with me wherever I go. It’s going to take effort to leave work at home and remember what it’s like to make the beach my world once again. So I’m off…. to read, sleep, eat, laugh, think, surf, get a tan…. and vacation…

And to tide you over until next week, here’s a shot from my recent Lubbock, TX trip to visit Betsy. This is my new friend Claire… she was gracious enough to model for a spur of the moment shoot…

I suppose looking back, English was one of my better subjects in school. I liked writing, I just didn’t like pencils that wouldn’t stay sharp… and I didn’t like the hand cramps (in the age before everything was written on a computer). But then I went on a life-changing adventure as a mission photographer with YWAM. Instead of writing email updates to everyone I knew…. I decided a blog might be a better way of communication to a group of people. It was during that trip and directly after that I truly realized how important transparency and honesty is in relationships. People need connection…. more than just connection, they need something to connect to. We all run around trying to be someone we’re not for appearances sake… but many times we forget that we’re all just human. “We’re all allowed to be scared of something,” says a very wise 6 year old named Nina. It’s true. And oftentimes we’re so caught up in the seemingly impossible task of becoming “successful”, and “making it” that we become lost in the “in between.” So when I blog about my life, or about the people I shoot… or about my cat…. I’m trying to fill the gap between who we are and who we want to be. Who am I? I’m Kate. I’m just a human. I like taking pictures. I love being a wedding photographer. Life is an adventure for me. I have so much to learn and I’m excited and frustrated at the same time about that. Who do I want to be? I want to be perfect in everything I do…. now. I want to move mountains. I want to experience the power of God face to face like Moses did.

This guy named Ron Ploof emailed me a week ago asking permission to use an image of mine for a blog post he was doing on Social Media. I was so appreciative that he asked permission and was flattered he wanted to use one of my images, I immediately said “Go for it!” I had no clue he’d be writing what he did about me and my business. I started to read the post yesterday morning and 3 sentences in, my head exploded, sirens blared, and ”Does not compute. Does not compute” took over my brain waves. I have NEVER had someone publish something so cool about me and my business. NEVER. It took me a few seconds to regain composure and I continued to read about how this guy, a very popular and accomplished guy, perceives Kate Noelle.

After reading the article, I sat back, deep in thought, and my face slowly moved into a smile. It’s been a hard road and one of the most definitive adventures of my life starting my business…. and there have been more times than not that I’ve even had to answer the “why do I even bother blogging/twittering/facebooking” question for MYSELF. WHY? But Ron’s words were a big reminder of why it’s important… and his post is a huge affirmation that fighting to remain “me” in an industry and world that says I need to be someone else to succeed is exactly what has the potential to set me apart.

To read the full article, Click Here, or on the image below.

Ron… you rock.
